Celebrating Dairy Month with Legacy Dairy
Legacy Dairy is a fourth-generation family farm operated by the Jones family in Barren County, KY. Offering whole, non-homogenized milk, Legacy milk primarily comes from their Brown Swiss herd on the farm, where they have the option to graze pasture 365 days a year. The Jones family takes pride in knowing that Legacy milk comes strictly from cows raised and cared for on the farm, where it’s also bottled and processed.
Around 2017, the Jones family made plans to expand their traditional family dairy into a bottling facility, so they could have the option of selling bottled milk directly to the consumer as a value-added product. In 2018, Doug Jones reached out to KCARD for assistance with a business plan, financials, and funding sources. After finalizing a clear business plan and understanding all associated costs, the family was able to launch the new part of the dairy business in 2020.
“I don’t think we could have done it without KCARD’s help on the business plan,” said Doug Jones.
As the business expanded, the Jones family also worked with KCARD’s Local Food Expansion Initiative to connect with additional markets for their milk. Now, you can find Legacy milk in at least 21 counties across the state at retail locations, restaurants, and the Bounty of the Barrens Farmers’ Market in Glasgow (the only place to get a gallon of their beloved chocolate milk).
