Sonia Farfan is an active duty Army Specialist based at Fort Campbell and is participating in our AgVets internship program. She is interning at the University of Kentucky Research and Education Center in Princeton, KY.
1) Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from originally and how long have you been at Fort Campbell?
My name is Sonia Farfan, born and raised in Delano, California. I am the oldest of 4. My parents are from Michoacán Mexico. I have been at Fort Campbell since November 2018 and have learned so much from being in the Army. Growing up in California and coming here was very different in so many ways but I’ve enjoyed every bit of it.
2) What is your current rank and position?
I am an Army Specialist (E-4) and my position in the military is a unit supply specialist (92y). A supply specialist is responsible for supervising and maintaining army supplies and equipment.
3) What are your plans for after you exit the service?
My plans after finishing here at Fort Campbell are to go back to California and get a degree in agriculture.
4) What has been your favorite part of your internship with Kentucky AgVets so far?
My favorite part from the internship is that I am learning something new every single day. From weed science to horticulture, it has opened my eyes on so many different areas in agriculture.
5) Why are you interested in agriculture?
I am interested in agriculture because my dad is a farm worker and I have always been curious on how everything came together. For example, how weeds affect the environment in so many ways and how you can protect your crops with different methods. Once I get out of the Army my plans are to move back to California and finish college. Also, I would like to either help on the farm that my dad works at or begin maintaining my own farm.
Thanks to the University of Kentucky Research and Education Center specialist Edwin Ritchey, Chris Teutsch, Raul Villanueva and others for hosting this internship!
