You’ve made your first hire, gotten all the paperwork and file systems in place, and are ready to start training employees. How do you set yourself and your employee up for success? Below are some key points to focus on to make sure both parties have a successful experience.
Training: Make sure the employee has read through the employee handbook and is familiar with their job responsibilities and company policies. Depending on the position, you will need to decide whether some training needs to happen in a classroom setting or if it can be on the job. On the job training can also include “ride alongs” with current employees.
Feedback and Support: If your business has enough employees, assign an employee to act as a mentor as the new employee learns their new position. The mentor can provide additional support as needed through the training process. Setting up a regular time when you will check in with the new employee will help you capture any questions and feedback.
Retention: Once an employee has made it through the initial training period and feels established within the business, you want to schedule regular “one-on-ones" to stay on top of their satisfaction with the position and to help gauge when they are ready to be given new responsibilities. You can use also this time to identify and resolve issues before they become problems.
