Maps help us navigate the world, and they not only show us how to get from point A to point B, but, depending on the type of map, they can also help us to see where patterns, clusters, and gaps exist in a spatial environment. National and State Highlights from the USDA 2020 Local Food Marketing Practices Survey
In addition to the Census of Agriculture, USDA conducts topical surveys that cover specific sectors in agriculture such as Local Food Marketing Practices. We dove into the 2020 Local Food Marketing Practices survey results that were released in April 2022, and we resurfaced with a trove of information that highlights the current status of local food nationally and within the state.
Patterson's Butcher Shop: Feeding the Local Community
Nestled in between the small towns of Tompkinsville and Gamaliel in southcentral Kentucky, Patterson’s Butcher Shop is a recently opened custom processing business and meat retail store owned by Jorden Patterson Emmert. They offer custom slaughter and a wide variety of retail cuts, including beef, pork, lamb, goat, and ready to cook meals.
Local Food Census Maps: Visualizing Local Food Sales Across the State
Launched in 2020, KCARD’s Kentucky Local Food Expansion Initiative connects local farmers to buyers and seeks to grow a strong and diverse buyer-producer network across the state. One aspect of the initiative includes visualizing where local food production and sales are already occurring and where they are not to inform the work.

COVID-related shifts in the Local and Regional Food Systems Markets
We all know that over the course of one long year of COVID-19, our habits have changed. From baking bread to who we break bread with, new norms have been established at a rapid pace. One team of researchers, led by the University of Kentucky, is documenting the innovations and COVID-related shifts in the Local and Regional Food Systems markets.
